	Career diplomat Sir Alister McIntyre who became Vice-Chancellor of the University of the West Indies in the 1980s will retire in September for personal reasons.
We got the idea to build an Education Page when Sharon Stair worked at Panmedia. She had been an educator for more than three decades and had an intense interest in the subject. We designed the page for brief items on current education news, then later began developing longer pieces that we believed would be useful to serious researchers and students. As with some of the other pages on Jamaica Today, the Education page was updated forthnightly most of the time it was up. Of couse, choice of stories depended not only on their signifcance, but often on shelf life. The items at right were on the page at the time it was pulled off the Internet.	Dr. Lawrence Williams, lecturer in the Dept of Chemistry at UWI Mona is the 1998 recipient of the Caribbean Academy and Third World Academy of Sciences "Young Scientist Award."
	The Grade Six achievement test, a continuous assessement examination, is set to replace the single-day Common Entrance by 1999.
