The Jamaica Tourist Board presents
Perhaps the most important contact visitors to Jamaica make with those who live here comes through MEET THE PEOPLE , a programme sponsored by the Jamaica Tourist Board. Visitors who genuinely want to learn more about Jamaicans and this beautiful island can mingle with hosts here in their lifestyles, sports, hobbies or even professionally. Jamaican families entertain visitors in their homes, take them to the theatre, a picnic, a party or a tour of the countryside. Visitors are teamed up with Jamaicans who share a common profession, or interest.
FORGET ME NOT
In 1976, the Tourist Board adopted the wild flower "Forget-Me- Not"(above) as the MEET THE PEOPLE symbol because of the sentiment it communicates. Its colours are either white, pink or blue.
Volunteers offer an invaluable service that epitomizes the true Jamaican who is naturally friendly and hospitable. In their own small way they are fostering good relations among different nationalities and cultures. MEET THE PEOPLE has been so successful in the JTB's marketing strategy that other caribbean islands have copied it wholesale.

Manu volunteers now correspond regularly with foreigners from all over the globe, and many have had reciprocal visits to the homes abroad of their former MEET THE PEOPLE guests. More than 400 volunteer families now participate in the programme.

Mrs Inger Rice, a Dane who made Jamaica her home started the programme in Montego Bay in September 1968. A year later, MEET THE PEOPLE was launched in Kingston and in 1971 it was taken to Port Antonio, and Ocho Rios. Mandeville joined the programme in 1972.
