Panmedia did a different kind of event management recently, when we hosted a photography exhibition by renowned photographer Olivia McGilchrist. Collectors and many regulars on Jamaica’s art scene visited the one day show, some (w)hitey, at the Spanish Court Hotel’s Valencia Room.

It featured seven new works by Olivia and a limited edition of prints. Her recent works are mostly digitally composed still images whose angst and attitude has brought her attention in the Caribbean and elsewhere.

Olivia has exhibited in Madrid and London, and begins her first Canadian exhibition February 20 at Gallery 1313 in Toronto. The group show of artists of mixed race identity is titled Face Value and features works of two other Caribbean/European artists, Erika Defrietas and Jordan Clarke.

On March 13 she will screen her film Native Girl and speak in Kingston, Ontario as part of the Cultural Studies Program, Queen’s University.

Last September in Trinidad, Native Girl won the ARC Magazine New Media Prize, a developmental award given to artists whose work exhibits creativity, innovation, and contribution to the fields of video art and digital media.- See more at: http://panmedia.com.jm/news/201402/spanish-court-hotel-exhibition-first-...

Born in Kingston in 1981, and educated in France and the UK, McGilchrist moved back to Jamaica in 2011. She holds a Photography M.A. from the London College of Communication. She says much of her work is a definition of who she is as the product of a French mother and Jamaican father.

For the past two years, she worked as an Assistant Curator at the National Gallery of Jamaica and lectured at the Edna Manley College for the Visual and Performing Arts. - See more at: http://panmedia.com.jm/news/201402/spanish-court-hotel-exhibition-first-...

The late art historian Petrine Archer (for transparency, former partner of Panmedia CEO Knolly Moses) said in 2012: “Olivia’s rendering of her personal emotional stasis provides a frank and chilling perspective about the impact of race and cultural dislocation on contemporary Caribbean identities.” Panmedia is working closely with the Spanish Court Hotel and Coldwell Banker to host similar exhibitions at the Valencia. - See more at: http://panmedia.com.jm/news/201402/spanish-court-hotel-exhibition-first-...
