Scotia Scholars Techno Lounge

The Scotiabank Jamaica Foundation’s annual celebration for its Scholars had a special twist this year when more than 150 recipients were feted at Scotiabank’s Training Center.

To a day full of fun, frolic and food, Scotiabank added the Scotiarific Techno Lounge, a digital gaming and online environment created by Panmedia. Stocked with 20 computers, with social media access and three gaming stations, including a Wii, the Techno Lounge was a haven for students who prefer indoor activities. To top it off, participants also had a chance to compete to win lots of Lime credits, three Lime TV phones and a netbook.

To be eligible, participants were required to join the event’s Facebook page, set up beforehand by Panmedia but not published, and comment on the day’s activities.

A Panmedia team posted photo, videos and updates of the outdoor games and exercises on the Facebook page throughout the day at a large screen social media station. The students vied to keep their comments at the top of the queue to determine winners.  Dozens of eager Scotia Scholars competed in a digital quiz, giving answers in real time on the event’s Facebook page for dozens of giveaways.

Gaming stations were a huge hit, with the Xbox 360 and a Nintendo Wii staying occupied throughout the entire day. But the star of the Techno Lounge was the Xbox Kinect game simulator system that lets players use their bodies as the controller. Harmonix’s Dance Central game had most of the students learning complex choreography to the likes of Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Beenie Man, an activity that proved entertaining for both players and spectators!

“The students were keen to engage in the activities in the Techno Lounge,” says Debbie Clue, Manager, Public and Corporate Affairs, “they were thrilled that we included a digital space for the day’s celebrations.”

The hectic day ended with an original dub poetry by GSAT Student Philomena Barrett, inspirational words by Dr. Leachim Semaj and a surprise performance by reggae artiste GeeWhiz.
