It seems no matter where you go in Jamaica, water shortage is an issue.

How then are Jamaicans managing? Catching rainwater is one solution, but there hasn’t been enough of that either.

Here are a few trends we’ve noticed in this drought period.

1. Recycle, recycle
Nowadays, it seems nobody throws out plastic containers anymore. They make great storage for water.

2. Toilets are rarely flushed
This is rather gross, but apparently people are doing anything to conserve on water.

3. Water is reused
People are finding a use for all that water the washing machine lets out after a rinse. They are using it to wash the next load. That’s actually not a bad idea!

4. Only “important” areas are being washed.
Jamaicans have a way of saying they’re going to “wash up.” Seems many have to resort to this in these water scarce times.

Luxury baths are saved for the very few occasions that water comes from the pipes.

5. Unexpected visitors are turning up at your door
Visits from old girlfriends/boyfriends from neighborhoods where there are lock offs.

6. Mass plant death
Precious plants are dying. Some people are in tears over the loss of some of their cherished plants.

7.  Reduced Windshield wiping
The squeegee guys (window wipers) are finally taking no for an answer so they don’t waste their already dirty water.
